Social Media Tools, Tips and Tricks

I was asked to answer a few questions for Dagens Opinion, a Swedish newspaper regarding new social media tools and apps; which ones are worth it and which ones are not?

See my answers here, or in Swedish below.

Dina tankar kring Google Plus?

Waiting for ‘Superman’ – Infographic on Education

A video I found on the importance of education in the U.S. passing on a message with a very effective animated infographic. ‘This animation is for a startling documentary called, “Waiting For ‘Superman’” that highlights some very serious issues in America today and it made us feel good to make it.’

Usama Bin Laden is Dead! Now, let’s MOVE FORWARD!

The Most Wanted Man defeated

Away, so far away from my reality, there’s been a war – the 21st Century war by the name “War of Terror”, led by United States of America and United Kingdom. An ongoing campaign since October 2001, instigated by the September 11 attacks. Now, a decade later, Osama Bin Laden, leader of the terrorist organization al-Qaeda, that was behind the 9/11 attacks, has finally been defeated.

Obama makes an end to what Bush starts and becomes the hero

For 10 years Usama has dominated in our news. Though it hasn’t been my reality, I, so as everyone else have been affected by his existence and the War of Terror. And for a lot of people, it’s hard to accept that this person who’s been an icon of terrorism, is now gone. Now, I’m sure if you were the Most Wanted Man in The World, you would not be standing there in the background being amused of your death announcement. You would guarantee step forward. Reality check: Usama Bin Laden is dead!

Leader of democracy promotes violence – morally right or wrong?

When the news came out, American people who’s been suffering by seeing their children taking off to the war only to not return home, were cheering for Usama’s death. The rest of the world, stays still and wonder if this really is the end. And it’s arguable whether his death was honorable or not. As we’re promoting a democratic society for the middle east, Usama’s death might not have been the most democratic action. But when a person harms the world and its people, you loose all humanitarian respect for that person.

Moving towards a globalized world rather than a segregated and fearful society

And I now hope, that with his death, peace will be rest upon us: that Islamophobia will be vanished, that United States looses up their custom border rules, that immigration reforms, that airport security looses up, that we move into a globalized world and thinking, rather than going backwards and being segregated!

I pray for a change moving forward!

American Men and Commitment

I’ve always thought American men are so wishy-washy and American girls to be pushy. Before I couldn’t understand the women’s behavior, but now I do. They understand the game.

Let me tell you more about it…

So, the thing with Americans, is that they’re all so enthusiastic, so excited in the beginning. When they meet you – “Oh, you’re from Europe, how exciting!” When you apply for a job – “Wow, we’re so impressed with your resume, you would be a perfect addition to our team”, or when you’re dating someone – They go all in.

All this would be fine if they stick to their enthusiasm!

I love Americans for so many reasons (will save that for another post) but during my visits in the States, I’ve encountered numerous cultural differences and I’ve learned to not rely on everything they say: A) Always have a backup plan. B) Don’t get excited until you get a commitment C) Action speaks louder than words.

In US, you hear people say “see you around”, but in fact they know they have no chance to see you again. Saying goodbye is accepting the loss and feeling the suffer.

If you look at it culturally, American society is very drawn to entertainment. To not feel the time passing, there’s always interruption in the background to fulfill your mind.  When they’re on the treadmill in the gym they’re listening to music through headphones, there’s TV in the background and a magazine in front of them. (Could explain why Americans are so good at multitasking.)

The entertainment is there to divert your mind from the dark side of the world. And suddenly entertainment becomes your reality. Where there’s always happy endings. You don’t experience the suffering.

When it comes to commitment in business, Europeans are very direct and honest, putting the cards straight on the table. They appear withdrawn and skeptical “what do I have to commit for this / what are the fees?”. You’ll tell them the answer, and they’ll make a direct decision: Yes or No. Asians appear disinterested or not impressed until you get a sudden commitment from them. Which will surprise you, as you didn’t expect them to say yes. Americans on the other hand, shows a lot of enthusiast in the beginning, which slowly fades away when you start discussing the commitment.

Now, in an ideal world, you would want a combination of them all – enthusiastic but direct, skeptical but ready to commit.

What about commitment in relationships?

Dating is frictionless. It’s like a being at a social hub like an airport where you don’t have any link to anyone and it won’t take off any direction. You’re just at the airport the whole time. It’s fun, it’s social, it’s commitment free.

Some people stay at the airport forever, cause they’re scared the plane might crash. But others jump on the first plane and do a smooth landing in another paradise. They’re the guys you want to be with. Who will admit a link between you and who is ready to suffer.

Now, how do you know that a guy will commit? When you’re looking for things in people, you have to be patience to let them find those things in you. And if they find those things, commitment should not be an issue. But question is, are you willing to wait for that, for them to make that choice?

I’m not saying to be pushy. But be very direct what you want so you don’t stay at the airport the whole time waiting. If the guy is avoiding answers about where you stand when you ask him or if he wants to talk about it later, take it as, he doesn’t want to talk about it. He’s not interested!

Money helps to avoid commitment in a materialistic society where you believe money trades everything. Someone helps you with your luggage – you tip them. You receive a service – you trade it with money. The counter scans your products and you pay them. Once you pay, you don’t need to care about their feelings. As far you know, you’ve paid. You have no link. You have obliged your part. Your trade.

In a relationship, you want to make sure the guy is not “trading your services”. If he can’t be in normal circumstances, he is afraid to admit the link.

Everyone has a certain amount of romance and you just want be sure they don’t spend it all early and then run out.

When it’s in your social norms to behave certain way, you don’t really question it. But for someone like me, an outsider I see things differently. And I’m learning. I’m not planning to be a bitch. But I’m learning to A) not trust anyone B) don’t get excited about an offer until there’s a contract in place C) Be skeptical if a guy is wining and dining you, but not really making an effort to be in ‘normal’ circumstances and D) If talking about where you stand makes him nervous – then walk away.

My advice to Men: Don’t beat around the bush!

Road Trip East Coast for Ultra Music Festival

An epic journey so far….

I decided to go to Miami with some friends. As I booked my flight, we realized that the biggest Music Festival is that exact weekend. Tickets were already sold out and I had no expectations whether I would be able to make it or not. But as we’re driving down, listening to music live from the festival, I got hyped up and felt determined to drive straight down to Miami to make it for the Festival. A 6 hrs flight SFO to NYC and then a 24 hr road trip East coast, straight to Miami Beach ready to party!

Yes, I must be crazy, but this happens only once in a life time.  I arrive to Miami at 6am, got ready in 5 mins – a la trunk style, then with no plans I wonder around feeling slightly lost. But just getting there to see the sunrise was good enough for me.

I wasn’t able to check in to the rented apartment before noon, so after 2 days of no sleep I crashed at the beach for 2 hrs, waking up to beautiful marks all over my body (guess I should have slept with a bikini on).

By the time I checked in to the apartment, I was still determined to find a pair of tickets to make it to the festival (I didn’t just drive straight through East Coast for nothing). So had to think of plan B. I checked Ultra Music Festival Facebook Page and noticed lots of people selling last-minute tickets. I immediately contacted this woman and organized to collect tickets from her. At first I was worried they might be fake – it kind of was too good of a deal to be true.

Still barely any sleep, back to the apartment to collect things and for a quick change. Knowing the line up, I was so excited that my mind was only focusing on getting to the venue as quick as possible. I made it in good time to see Lucky Luke, Erick Morillo, P Diddy, Will I am, David Guetta, Sander von Dorn and the Chemical Brothers. And the tickets turned out be… 100% genuine.

The most amazing experience of my life. Totally worth 3 days of no sleep ;-)

Watch out Orange County Girls!

Everyone’s heard of housewives in Orange Country right? There about mid 40, but look like mid 20 from a distance. If you ain’t got money you, ain’t got no honey – that’s how they roll over here.

So, I’ve finally arrived to this very much beautiful location in Southern California, where you found all the blondes and big boobs. It’s here they filmed The OC, The Hills, Laguna Beach and The Housewives of Orange County.

I went for a walk last night, catching the sunset. I wish you were here!

ttyl,

Gotta go, gonna go show the OC ladies how we Swedish Brunettes roll ;-)
